(more…)CloudFlare is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that sits between websites and their visitors to make sites faster, more secure, and more reliable. It's one of the largest pieces of internet infrastructure, and a big share of websites route traffic through it.
Cloudflare has data centers in 330 cities across more than 120 countries. When you put a site behind Cloudflare, you point your domain's DNS at them, so visitor requests go to Cloudflare's global network of data centers first. Cloudflare can then serve cached copies of your content from a location near the visitor, filter out malicious traffic, and pass only legitimate requests to your actual server.
What it offers:
Its free tier is a big reason for its popularity, since small sites and hobbyists get basic protection and CDN service at no cost.
The tradeoff is that because so much of the web depends on Cloudflare, an outage on their end can take down large chunks of the internet at once.
(more…)This article answers the question, "What is a CDN?" A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a great way to boost your website's speed, availability, and performance.
It's a system made up of servers distributed across the globe, each holding a cached copy of your website's static content. When a user visits your site, the server geographically closest to them delivers that static content, cutting down on load time.
Content Delivery Network also provides security from various attacks like SQL injection and denial of service (DOS) and keeps your website safe.
The static content of a website includes – CSS files, JavaScript, Fonts, Video/Audio files, Plain HTML, Downloadable files and Images. These things stay the same for every user and don't change unless a developer or content owner manually updates them. The server sends the exact same file to everyone who requests it — no processing, no database queries, no per-user customization.
This is exactly why CDNs are so effective for this kind of content: since a static file doesn't change per request, it can be cached at edge servers around the world and served identically to any user, anywhere, without needing to check back with the origin server each time.
This is the opposite of dynamic content — things like a personalized dashboard, search results, or a shopping cart, which are generated on the fly by the server based on the specific user, their session, or a database lookup, and therefore can't be cached and reused the same way across different visitors.
