SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security protocol that encrypts the connection between a web browser and a web server. An SSL Certificate is a digital certificate that verifies a website's identity and enables this encrypted connection, so data such as passwords, payment details, and personal information can't be intercepted or tampered with in transit. Websites with a valid certificate load over HTTPS and show a padlock icon in the browser, which tells visitors the site is authentic and safe to use.
